Flat feet is a condition that is usually painless. Simply put, a person with flat feet has feet that are flatter on the bottom and allow the entire sole to touch the floor when standing. This condition is normal in babies and toddlers, as their feet have not developed an arch yet, but can cause body alignment issues in adults.
In adults, flat feet are caused when a condition called over pronation causes the arch height to decrease over time. Over pronation is typically caused by posterior tibial tendon dysfunction (PTTD), which occurs when the tendon that maintains proper arch position becomes damaged.
If this condition is causing you pain there are several treatment options. Let Alyssa Piccillo, DPM, AACFAS, FACFAOM evaluate your case and recommend the correct treatment for the severity of your condition. In rare cases, surgery is required to repair soft tissue structures and correct bone deformities.
